US President Donald Trump has unveiled a road named after him at a ceremony in Florida.
The road links his private club and residence in Mar-A-Lago to Palm Beach International Airport, which the president and his motorcade frequently use.
The four-mile stretch of Southern Boulevard will be renamed to ‘President Donald J Trump Boulevard’, which was revealed at the event, showing a brown and yellow sign with his name on it.
Lawmakers voted unanimously to rename the road last September, with Trump celebrating the change at Friday’s ceremony.
He told the audience that people who look at the sign will be ‘filled with pride, just pride, not in me, pride in our country, pride in this state, because our nation will be stronger, richer and more successful, which is what it is right now’.
Trump said he was ‘tremendously honoured’ by the recognition, Reuters reported.
‘I’ll remember this amazing gesture for the rest of my life,’ he said at the ceremony in Mar-A-Lago.
He clarified that the name change will not impact official addresses, emergency response systems or government maps, Reuters reported.
The ceremonial renaming of the road marks yet another instance in which Trump has attached his name to Washington’s buildings and institutions since returning to office last January.
He faced opposition from members of the public after he sought to attach his name to the Kennedy Center and the US Institute of Peace.
But in the year since he was inaugurated for a second term as US president, Trump has consistently made headlines for his controversial changes, including those made to the White House.
In October, Trump’s decision to demolish the historic East Wing of the White House angered many Americans, as he made way for the new construction.
He hopes to create a new 90,000 square foot ‘gilded ballroom’ – a building that would dwarf the White House, which is only 55,000 square feet.
Trump also came under fire in December when he shared pictures of plaques installed under portraits of previous US leaders in the Presidential ‘hall of fame’.
The installation formed part of his ‘upgrades’ to the White House in which he called former president Joe Biden ‘the worst President in American history’.
Trump has also instilled fears in nations across the globe after a cryptic White House social media post showing the president gazing towards a map of Greenland.
It comes as Trump has repeatedly claimed Greenland should become a part of the United States.
