The City of Ekurhuleni has confirmed that MMC for Roads and Transport Andile Mngwevu and others travelling with him are missing in Mozambique after the vehicle they were in was swept away by floodwaters.
According to the municipality, the incident occurred amid severe flooding affecting parts of Mozambique.
It remains unclear whether Mngwevu and the other occupants managed to escape from the vehicle.
Search and Rescue Underway
Members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), working alongside their Mozambican counterparts, have launched a search operation to locate Mngwevu and the other missing individuals.
Rescue teams are continuing efforts under challenging conditions as flooding persists in the area.
Family Assisting in Search
The City confirmed that Mngwevu’s family has travelled to Mozambique to assist authorities and remain close to the search efforts as rescue operations continue.
