Why Orlando Pirates chose Moroccan coach – Bundlezy

Why Orlando Pirates chose Moroccan coach

Orlando Pirates supporters have finally met their new head coach for next season’s Betway Premiership, and it is not Rulani Mokwena.

The chosen one is Moroccan international Abdeslam Ouaddou. The former AS Vita coach made his name in Mzansi after needing 12 games to save Marumo Gallant from relegation.

His five wins out of 12 included a 2-0 win over Orlando Pirates and a 2-1 triumph over Kaizer Chiefs.

Speaking to Radio 2000 on Tuesday, the club’s media officer Thandi Merafe revealed the Sea Robbers’ thinking behind the decision. Saying the 46-year-old is a diamond with a noteworthy demeanour and professionalism.

Kaizer Chiefs news: African striker and former Pirates star

“Our management has been working tirelessly to prepare the team for the upcoming season, making sure they get the right people in the right space,” Merafe said on Radio 2000.

“We’ve seen how in the past they’ve always managed to get it right, and getting the hidden diamond. I use that term because more often than not, we bring in people that the general public doesn’t know about.

“Orlando Pirates have a very keen eye and an amazing ability to unearth talent and people that are perfect for the brand. So I’m happy with the announcement of the new coach.

“I think the one match where we played against him [at Gallants], you can see the behaviour of the coach when he’s under pressure, the attitude, and the professionalism. He came out as someone who is professional and a gentleman of the game, and I’m sure everyone at the club is looking forward to working with him.”

OFFICIAL CLUB STATEMENT ANNOUNCEMENT

“Orlando Pirates Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Abdeslam Ouaddou as the new Head Coach.

“Ouaddou takes over the reins ahead of the new season, replacing Jose Riveiro at the helm following his decision to step down to join Al Ahly, after a successful three-year tenure.

“Born in Alnif, Morocco, the 46-year-old brings a wealth of experience both as a player and a tactician. A former Moroccan international, Ouaddou earned 68 caps for The Atlas Lions and enjoyed a distinguished playing career across several top European leagues. His deep understanding of the game, coupled with a strong leadership profile, positions him well to lead the Buccaneers into a new era.

“Coach Ouaddou, who is expected to arrive in South Africa towards the end of the week, will be assisted by Mandla Ncikazi and Rayaan Jacobs, Helmi Gueldich and Tyron Damons.

“Pre-season preparations will officially kick off on June 27.

“As part of preparations for the upcoming campaign, Orlando Pirates will embark on their third consecutive international pre-season tour to Marbella, Spain. The training camp – set to run from July 8 to July 20, will see the team engage in high-level friendly matches against European opponents including Bolton Wanderers (England), Pafos FC (Cyprus), Las Palmas (Spain), and Granada (Spain).”
