If you gaze up to the skies over the Western Cape coastline, there’s an excellent chance you’ll spot marine conservation photographer Jean Tresfon flying overhead.
Tresfon has been taking to the air for several years now, bringing those followers of his Facebook page award-winning photographs taken from his trusty gyrocopter.
If you’re not already one of his over 70 000 followers, we strongly suggest you do so.
First sighting
On his most recent excursion in early 2026, Tresfon managed to capture a photo of a marlin – his first such sighting in over 15 years of flying.
Tresfon captioned the image: “A big marlin! My first sighting of a billfish from the air in over 15 years of flying this coastline.”
He estimated the marlin to be around four metres in length.
On the same flight Tresfon also photographed garrick, yellowtail, bronze whaler sharks, duckbill rays, bottlenose and humpback dolphins, dusky kob, a great white shark – and a turtle – among several other marine species.
