Adolescence’s Erin Doherty reveals her mum told her off after Emmys speech

Erin Doherty has had quite the start to the year. In 2025, the actress starred in the Netflix smash Adolescence, the hard-hitting drama penned by Stephen Graham about a young boy, Jamie, who is accused of murdering his female classmate. Erin, 33, starred as Dr. Briony Ariston, a child psychologist, who unpacks Jamie’s behaviour in one of the episodes. Her performance was so captivating that she instantly became a global star, and fast forward to 2026, was awarded for her efforts with a Golden Globe. (Picture: Getty Images)
Following the star-studded ceremony, which took place in Beverly Hills on January 12, Erin is now back in the UK, where she has been celebrating her win. On a recent promo stop at the Graham Norton show, Erin shared a hilarious story about how her mum reacted to her Emmys speech. (FYI, Erin also won the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie award last year for the same role). (Picture: Getty Images)

While sitting next to the likes of Idris Elba, Wunmi Mosaku, Martin Freeman and Olivia Dean, Erin joked that her mother told her off for some of the language she used. She told Graham, the guests and the audience: ‘So basically, obviously, with the time delay we got back after the Emmys, and I like Facetimed my sister, and my mum just happened to be there, and we were all like cheering. But she just butted her head in and was like, “Can I just say,” she was very serious. “I could have done without the swearing”.'(Picture: Ben Blackall/Netflix)
Erin added: ‘I was like “What’s going on?” I had the trophy in my hand, I was like “Mum this is a thing.” And she was like, “Yeah, great, well done, could have done without the swearing.”‘ The actress then told the studio that she ‘didn’t mean’ to curse, but had a pretty good excuse for doing so. But not because of her disbelief at winning the award. Rather, because she was starstruck by a certain celeb. (Picture: Getty Images)
Erin recalled: ‘I think I just called everyone like, f****** stunning or something like that. I was like Cate Blanchett was right there and I was like “she’s f****** stunning.” I had words with my mum and she was like, “If you get up on stage again you can’t swear” and I was like “Ok, I’ll make you a promise”.'(Picture: Getty Images)
Erin wasn’t the only Adolescence star to use explicit language, though. At the Golden Globes, Stephen Graham was speaking in the winner’s room following his Best Performance by an Actor win, when he told the crowd about his meeting with Snoop Dogg earlier in the evening. The iconic rapper was presenting at the awards, and made many other famous stars’ dreams come true (Aimee Lou Wood, we’re looking at you) by meeting him. (Picture: Getty Images)

While speaking, Stephen said: ‘If you don’t mind, I’d like to tell you all what happened today. I met Snoop Dogg, and he shook my hand, and he looked me right in the eye. I couldn’t see his eyes because he had his glasses on, and he just said: “You’re a m***** f****** gangster.” My life is complete. Thank you.’ Adolescence is streaming on Netflix.
