Europe’s biggest hotel operator, which runs hundreds of properties across the continent, has declared insolvency.

Revo Hospitality Group, formerly known as HR Group, has a portfolio of over 260 hotels that operate across 12 European countries and 146 cities.

The group, which launched in 2008, went on to become Europe’s largest white-label (third-party) operator, with a mix of hotels under major franchise brands including Hilton, Marriott, Accor, Wyndham, and IHG.

Revo Hospitality Group also runs its own labels, such as Vagabond Club, Hyperion, and Aedenlife.

While the move will affect around 140 companies within the group, there will be no changes to the 125 hotels in Austria and Germany, or their employees.

The group explained that the ‘economic crisis’ was the main catalyst, adding that 140 companies, including the management and holding company, ‘got into difficulties.’

The hotel group said: ‘Around 140 companies belonging to the REVO Hospitality Group have filed for insolvency under their own management at Charlottenburg District Court.

‘The approximately 125 hotels in Germany and Austria will continue to operate with all 5,500 employees. The proceedings will be supervised by court-appointed administrators.’

They also cited ‘increased wage costs’ and the ‘sharp rise in minimum wages.’ Plus, that ‘higher costs for rent, energy and food’ were ‘weighing on the business.’

The statement ended: ‘Above all, the strong expansion of the Revo Hospitality Group in recent years led to duplicate structures and integration problems.’

Metro has contacted Revo Hospitality Group for comment.

In 2008, Revo Hospitality Group took over its first hotel in the Saxony city of Leipzig, Germany.

From 2020, the group reportedly scaled up from 51 to 250 hotels, employed 8,300 staff across Europe, and earned up to £1.1 billion in annual revenue.
