January seems to be lasting forever, doesn’t it? It’s cold. It’s dark, the festive season is a distant memory, and spring is still weeks away. At least there’s still plenty to watch on Netflix, though, with the streaming platform wasting no time in unleashing some pretty big movies upon us before the first month of 2026 is even up. One film in particular has seen off all-comers over the past week with the kind of viewing figures others can only dream of. Just what have you all been watching – and can last week’s chart-topper, People We Meet On Vacation, hang in there at number one? Read on to find out just what’s in the global top 10… (Picture: Claire Folger/Netflix)

Kicking off this week’s countdown is this beloved animal animation film, enjoying a welcome revival on Netflix over two decades after release. It centres around a group of spoiled animals at New York Central Zoo, who accidentally escape thanks to four fugitive penguins. A spot of romance now, courtesy of the 2016 adaptation of Jojo Moyes’ novel. Emilia Clarke takes the lead here as Louisa, a young woman who lands the job of caregiver to Will (Sam Claflin) – a man who has been left quadriplegic after being hit by a motorcycle. He’s got his heart set on getting out of his wheelchair, even if death is the only way of doing so. A funny and morally complex tale, which will leave you questioning what you would do in the protagonists’ shoes. (Picture: Line Cinema/Kobal/Shutterstock)

This one follows 21-year-old Hiccup seeking a dragon utopia known as the Hidden World (hence the title), while coming to terms with Toothless’ new bond with a female Fury. All this and trying to deal with the threat of ruthless dragon hunter Grimmel the Grisly on top of it. Phew! Picture: AP)

Another year, another dose of true crime on Netflix. This one, which originally aired on Lifetime in the US, is a 2022 dramatisation of the murder of Bill McGuire, a US Navy veteran whose body was found in three separate suitcases in the Chesapeake Bay in 2004. His wife Melanie, a nurse at a fertility clinic, was later convicted of his killing and was jailed for life in 2007, with the crime being dubbed the ‘suitcase murder’ by the media. Just weeks after the momentous Netflix series came to an end, fans are getting the chance to take a peek behind the scenes, at the years of effort and craft that went into bringing the final instalment to the screen. If you couldn’t get enough of the show, you won’t want to miss this. (Picture: Netflix)

Hopping off the top spot this week – but still with the sort of viewing figures which would secure a number one in most weeks – is another book-to-screen adaptation, this one of the best-selling romance novel by Emily Henry. The movie centres around Poppy (Emily Bader) and Alex (Tom Blyth), who are best friends despite having nothing in common. For a decade, the pair went on holiday together for one week, until a falling out. Two years later, Poppy rekindles the friendship and invites him on one last trip – but could the romantic sparks start flying? (Picture: Michele K. Short/Netflix)

1. The Rip – 41,600,000 views

Ben Affleck as Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne shining a flashlight and Matt Damon as Lieutenant Dane Dumars standing next to him in The Rip
2026 may barely have got out of the starting gate, but Netflix has already hit the jackpot with this Matt Damon/Ben Affleck action thriller, scoring the sort of first-week viewing figures which could well see it being crowned one of the biggest movies of the year. The film, based on a true story, sees Damon and Affleck playing Miami cops who are part of a team that discovers a stash of what appears to be $20million in a safehouse. They have to count the money before they can leave the scene, but also have to survive the night as suspicion sets in. We don’t see this one being ripped from the charts any time soon.
