Over 13,000 Pounds of Grilled Chicken Recalled Over Contamination Risk

Consumers in seven states have been alerted to a recall involving an estimated 13,720 pounds of ready- to-eat grilled chicken breast products, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced recently.

Suzanna’s Kitchen, a Norcross, Ga.-based company, recalled the grilled chicken breast fillets last week due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

What is Listeria?

Listeria monocytogenes bacteria causes the listeriosis infection, which can be particularly serious for several groups of people, including pregnant women, newborns, those over the age of 65 and those with weakened or compromised immune systems.

When confined to the intestines, the most common symptoms of listeriosis infection include vomiting, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal issues. However, if the infection moves beyond the gut and becomes “invasive,” it can lead to more serious symptoms like fever, headache, seizures and confusion.

What to know

The Suzanna’s Kitchen products come in 10-lb. cases containing two 5 lb. bags of fully cooked, ready-to-eat grilled chicken breast fillets with rib meat. They contain the lot code 60104 P1382 287 5 J14 on the side of the package and the establishment number P-1382 inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The chicken breast fillets were shipped to distribution centers for sale in the following states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Ohio.

“The problem was discovered when a third-party laboratory sample reported a positive Listeria monocytogenes result in the ready-to-eat fully cooked grilled chicken breast fillets product,” says the USDA release.

The good news is that no illnesses have been reported related to the consumption of these products.

This is the second recent recall involving Suzanna’s Kitchen. In conjunction with the FDA, the company also recalled over 60,000 pounds of chicken nationwide back in December due to allergy concerns.
