Residents in several Johannesburg suburbs will experience an eight-hour electricity interruption on Sunday, 25 January, as City Power carries out planned maintenance at the Wemmer Substation. The outage is scheduled to take place from 8:00 to 16:00 and will affect more than 10 areas across the south of the city.
City Power said the planned interruption forms part of ongoing efforts to improve the reliability and performance of the electricity network. The utility urged residents and businesses to prepare in advance by switching off sensitive appliances and making alternative arrangements where necessary.
In a notice to customers, the utility confirmed that the outage is unavoidable due to the nature of the work that needs to be done.
“The interruption is necessary to do essential maintenance work on our network, which is part of our program of constantly striving to provide a better service,” the notice said.
Johannesburg suburbs set to experience the outage
The power interruption will affect a wide range of residential and commercial areas linked to the Wemmer Substation. These include The Hill, Josh Co, The Hill Extension, Turffontein Extension, Rosettenville, Regents Park, and parts of City Deep.
Other areas expected to be impacted include Market Boundary 1, 2, 3 and 4, Bassonia via Rip Control, as well as several standby zones such as Rosettenville Standby, Turffontein Standby, and City Deep Extension 29 Standby.
Residents are advised to plan for the whole eight-hour period, even if power is restored earlier than expected.
Safety warnings and restoration notice
City Power has also issued a safety warning to all affected customers, reminding them to treat electrical connections with caution during the outage period.
“As the supply may be restored at any time, customers are urged to always treat their electricity supply points as live,” the utility said.
This means residents should avoid working on electrical systems or assuming that power will only return at 16:00. Sudden restoration could pose safety risks if appliances or equipment are left switched on.
City Power acknowledged that planned outages often inconvenience residents but emphasised that such maintenance is critical for long-term network stability.
The utility apologised for the disruption, stating that “City Power regrets any inconvenience that this power outage may cause.”
Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official City Power communication channels and report any faults if power is not restored within the scheduled timeframe.
