The 1975 spark fears of split with cryptic message

Last night, completely out of the blue, a cryptic comic-style post appeared on social media, seemingly implying The 1975 had broken up.

While we’ve been distracted by Harry Styles’ music comeback, 1975 fans are spiralling at the possibility that Matty Healy, Adam Hann, Ross MacDonald and George Daniel have parted ways.

The iconic indie group just reached dizzying career highs, taking one of the coveted headliner slots at Glastonbury in 2025.

It seemed like the band was bigger than ever after their huge – and attention-grabbing – world tour, culminating at Worthy Farm.

Fans even believed new music was on the way, as it has been four years since the band released their last album, Being Funny in a Foreign Language.

Despite Matty, 36, teasing two albums are in the works, this post shared on both their socials and label Dirty Hit’s left fans convinced the worst had happened.

Are The 1975 breaking up?

‘Did you hear about The 1975?’ asked one woman at the top of the comic, as another replied: ‘Yeah, I’m shook up, man! I wanted that to last forever!!’

A man declares it’s part of an act’, discussing how ‘loopy’ the ‘kid’ (Matty) has gone as a newspaper says, ‘Is this the end for The 1975’.

‘Am I crazy or is this a break up post??????’ asked panicked fan PearliePearlss on X.

‘Oh, it’s over,’ added brainwashedanna as plenty of other fans screamed ‘what do you mean’ in the comments.

However, older fans may find the post a little familiar, as the comic was actually originally shared as part of their second album rollout.

The 1975 might just be hopping on the 2016 trend, but we doubt it’s as innocent as a simple throwback.

This February marks the 10 year anniversary of I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It.

Often referred to as ILIWYS, the album contained tracks like The Sound, Love Me and Somebody Else, which are regarded as some of the band’s iconic songs.

It is widely regarded as one of the best albums of 2016 and solidified the band as leaders in the slightly overstuffed guitar band genre of that era.

As we’ve seen with everyone from Ariana Grande to Oasis, anniversary re-releases are big money, and The 1975’s reissue of their debut three years ago was met with excitement.

This isn’t the first time The 1975 have been hit with hiatus or split rumours, in fact, while on tour in 2023, Matty announced on stage: ‘After this tour, we will be going on an indefinite hiatus of shows.’

They then played Glastonbury 2025, but have not announced any new shows since – they have, however, announced music.

Are The 1975 making new music?

Eagle-eyed fans will have spotted the word ‘DOGS’ featuring in The 1975’s Glastonbury set, flashing in red letters on the screen at the end of their set.

George’s drum kit also featured the word, which Matty has since confirmed is the name of their upcoming album.

Bizarrely, Dirty Hit did promote a DJ duo called 2D0GS hours before The 1975 throwback post, leaving fans so confused in the comments.

‘Thought this was for the 1975. Wow,’ said Nick Richert, mirroring other fans’ sentiments.

They may not be too far off the money, though, as George is attached to 2D0GS, performing on line-ups with them next month in Paris and London.

The electronic group is signed to his club label dh2, a dance-focused sibling of Dirty Hit, which Matty and the band are stakeholders.

It could simply be a coincidence or an elaborate promotion by The 1975, honestly, since Matty is known for his ‘performance art’, who knows at this point.

As for their actual new music, Denise Welch’s son told a fan in a TikTok they have ‘made two’, adding: ‘It might be one, it might be two… but yeah, we’ve made two albums.’

Manager Jamie Osbourne told NME they were ‘making a record at the moment. I don’t know when it will come out, but they’re making one…’

He added: ‘I think they’ve earned the right to take their time. The world’s gonna be listening, so it needs to be right.’

Fans believe the album’s lead single God Has Entered My Body, which is the caption of one of Matty’s Instagram posts where he is sat in the studio.

The song allegedly has the lyric: ‘Keep your head up, princess, your tiara is falling.’

This was reported by The Sun to be a dig at Taylor Swift, whom he is thought to have dated after her split with Joe Alwyn.

Taylor confirmed during her Eras Tour docuseries on Disney Plus that she had ‘been through two breakups’ during her mammoth tour but did not specify who.

The source continued: ‘Matty will never publicly comment on his relationships, but he lets his deepest feelings out in his songs and gets everything off his chest.

‘Fans will want to listen to the lyrics very carefully.

‘Huge if true,’ Matty quipped on social media about the lyrics, which fans pointed out is the caption to a 2021 post from the Girls singer, one of the few on his Instagram page.

We don’t yet have a release timeline for new music, with the insider originally saying they would drop an album last summer, which proved false.

The 1975 have wiped their Instagram, as they have been known to do ahead of album launches, as well as changing the profile picture to their name in a new font.

It’s unlikely the band will drop anything before the February 26 anniversary of ILIWYS … but that’s only a month away now.
