We all know that the frenzy over news about the next James Bond actor is bonkers right now. Ever since Daniel Craig revealed that No Time To Die would be his last 007 flick, every eligible actor you’ve ever heard of, including several people you haven’t, has been touted as the next man to play the famous super spy. But what if it happened to you? That’s the premise of a new Prime Video series called Bait starring Riz Ahmed, an actor who might be auditioning for the next James Bond.
Is it an actual James Bond movie? No. But this new series looks hilarious, and clearly taps into something in the culture right now: The obsession with wondering who could be the next Bond, and if that guy could be a down-to-earth dude, with a hilarious family. Here’s what we know about the show so far.
Bait Trailer Teases the (Fictional) Next James Bond
The first trailer for Bait is a short clip from the show, depicting Shah Latif (Riz Ahmed) hanging out with his family when a news story hits about him auditioning to be the next James Bond. His family is thrilled, shocked, and hilariously suggests that he might be too short, or even the wrong ethnicity. For Bond fans, these are familiar topics, rendered here in a quirky, smart style.
But, for non-Bond fans, there’s a lot else going on here. The show seems to be about family dynamics, race, and the confidence that men sometimes try to strive for, even if they don’t have it. In short, Bait could be a great deconstruction of Bond, masculinity, and everything in between.
