Sinners & One Battle After Another Lead 2026 Oscar Nominations

The nominations for the 98th Academy Awards have been announced.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another and Ryan Coogler‘s Sinners were the clear winners of the announcement, pulling in 30 nominations across several categories.

The biggest surprise of the Best Picture lineup this year was Joseph Kosinskis F1: The Movie, which snuck in over critical favorites It Was Just An Accident and Blue Moon. The film received four nominations in total, including Best Sound, Best Editing, and Best Visual Effects.

Brazilian actor Wagner Moura made a surprise appearance in the Best Actor category, pushing out expected nominee Jesse Plemons. Moura stars in the Bets Picture-nominated film The Secret Agent, which is available to watch in select theaters across the United States. The other nominees include Timothee Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke, and Michael B. Jordan.

The Best Actress category welcomed Kate Hudson for her performance in Song Sung Blue, leaving One Battle After Another‘s Chasi Infiniti without a mention. Rose Byrne and Jessie Buckley are considered the frontrunners in the category, with Renate Reinsve and Emma Stone also landing nominations.

The supporting categories saw two major snubs: Paul Mescal in Hamnet and Odessa A’Zion in Marty Supreme. Both actors were widely predicted to appear but were ultimately beaten by Delroy Lindo in Sinners and Elle Fanning in Sentimental Value, respectively. There was also no room for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande of Wicked: For Good, who both went unnominated.

There were no huge surprises in the Best Director category: Coogler, Safdie, PTA, Chloe Zhao, and Joaquim Trier all secured their expected nominations.

The screenplay categories saw Richard Linklater‘s Blue Moon sneak into the lineup in favor of Eva Victor‘s Sorry, Baby, which had been performing especially well among critics groups in the past months. There was also no room for Park Chan-wook’s No Other Choice, which failed to break through any of the five Best Picture nominees that were also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Warner Bros. was the clear winner of the nominations; the studio’s two highest-scoring movies, Sinners and One Battle After Another, accumulated a total of thirty nominations. Netflix and Neon trailed closely behind, both landing two spots each in the Best Picture lineup.
