Water tankers bring relief amid Knysna water crisis

Water tankers carrying borehole water are on their way to the Knysna Water Treatment Plant.

Knysna is currently in the grips of a deepening water crisis. With drought severely affecting the Garden Route region, this Western Cape town inches closer to a Day Zero-type scenario.

Thankfully, some relief has arrived in the form of these water tankers.

TANKERS TREK TO KNYSNA’S WATER TREATMENT PLANT

In a Facebook post shared on Thursday, 22 January 2026, the Knysna Municipality announced that the first contingent of borehole water was “officially en route to the Knysna Water Treatment Plant.”

The water, extracted from the PG Bison boreholes, will be delivered in large tanker trucks. These trucks were supplied by Gift of the Givers.

“This [arrival of the borehole water] follows the successful conclusion of a contract between Knysna Municipality and PG Bison,” the post reads.

According to IOL, the tankers will transport the water to the balancing dam at the plant. In doing so, this will help the “municipality in maintaining water supply and service delivery.”

Due to water extraction taking place adjacent to the N2 near the Karatara turn-off, the Knysna Municipality strongly urges motorists to proceed with caution in the immediate area.

‘EVERY DROP COUNTS’

Despite this much-needed form of relief, Knysna still has a long way to go before it is no longer classified as a “disaster zone”, says the municipality.

“While this is an encouraging step forward, we are not yet out of the woods,” the post concludes. “Day Zero remains a real possibility. Every drop counts, and we urge all residents to continue using water wisely and responsibly.”

Indeed, for Knysna’s water supply to be sustained until the next rainfall cycle, it’s crucial that residents take the necessary steps. These include adopting water-saving habits in order to keep Day Zero at bay.
