After years of neglect, the Stables Market in Durban’s Umgeni and Stamford Hill precinct is set for a major revival.
A multi-million-rand investment will see the site transformed into the Stables Lifestyle Market, marking the start of a broader redevelopment project aimed at restoring one of the city’s most recognisable community spaces near the rugby stadium.
The redevelopment will roll out in phases, with the new market scheduled to open in 2026.
A new vision for popular Durban market
The new Stables Lifestyle Market is being reimagined as a multi-use, family-friendly destination that combines food, retail, culture, and events in a single precinct.
Plans include:
- Curated food, craft and retail stalls
- Live music and cultural programming
- Dedicated event spaces
- A welcoming, pet-friendly environment
According to developers, the project is designed to reactivate the area while supporting a longer-term vision that complements surrounding sports and community initiatives.
A weekend spot with deep roots in the city
The Stables has a history stretching back more than 30 years. During those years, it became a popular weekend destination for families, creatives and small traders.
Now returning with a refreshed look, organisers say the aim is to blend modern amenities with the familiar warmth that made the market a Durban favourite.
The new market will be located at 9 Jacko Jackson Drive, Stamford Hill, and will operate weekly.
Planned trading hours include:
- Fridays: 12:00 to 22:00
- Saturdays: 10:00 to 22:00
- Sundays: 8:00 to 20:00
The 2026 events calendar will feature major themed markets and celebrations, including Easter, Diwali, and Christmas events.
Market organisers have already issued a call for unique, high-quality traders to join the new Stables community.
With construction and planning underway, the return of the Stables signals a renewed push to revitalise Durban’s inner-city lifestyle spaces and restore a much-loved market to its former place in the community.
