Residents and businesses in several parts of Durban will experience water supply interruptions on Tuesday, 27 January, as the Southern Aqueduct will be shut down to carry out major pipeline upgrade work.
The shutdown forms part of the City’s ongoing project to strengthen and modernise the bulk water network to ensure a more reliable supply in the long term.
The aqueduct will be closed at Kidd Place in Malvern from 01:00 on Tuesday, with work expected to be completed by 19:00 on Wednesday, 28 January.
ETHEKWINI MUNICIPALITY CONFIRMS TWO-DAY WATER SHUTDOWN IN DURBAN
The metropolitan municipality said the shutdown will allow contractors to scour sections of the pipeline and connect newly installed infrastructure to the existing system.
Teams from the Water Services Directorate will monitor reservoir levels throughout the maintenance period. Authorities warned that it may take several days for reservoirs to fully recover after the work is completed.
The eThekwini Municipality said the upgrade is necessary to improve water security and reduce the risk of future disruptions.
AREAS EXPECTED TO BE AFFECTED BY THE SHUTDOWN
A wide range of communities supplied by reservoirs linked to the Southern Aqueduct will be impacted, including parts of Bayview, Chatsworth, Umlazi, Folweni, Shallcross, Klaarwater, Queensburgh, Malvern and surrounding areas.
Multiple sections of Umlazi, including A through Z zones, as well as communities such as Ensimbini, Mangamazini, Ntabankulu, Silverglen, Arena Park, Montford, Risecliff, Savannah Park, and Mariann Industrial Park, are also expected to experience water interruptions.
