Why We Love This Deal
There’s a lot happening at REI right now. The outdoor retailer just added hundreds of styles from brands like Arc’teryx, Vuori, and even a few from Fjallraven to its deals section. It’s also upped the discounts on dozens of REI Co-op-brand jackets. Clearing out past-season styles like this isn’t unexpected at this time of year, but we were shocked to see the retailer’s top-rated down jacket back on sale for the first time in about a month.
The REI Co-op Magma 850 Down Jacket is back on sale, this time for $160, a 33% discount. It’s the largest price drop we’ve seen on this year’s version of the Magma 850. REI makes a new version of this jacket with small updates every year, and as expected, this year’s model has become a favorite, earning a 4.6-star rating among the retailer’s diehards.
It also comes in a hooded version, which is on sale for just $20 more.

Every year, REI releases the new Magma lineup, generally improving insulation mapping and using the latest tech materials, and this year is no different. It features 100% recycled ripstop nylon with a DWR-treated finish that’s crucially PFA-free and makes rain and water easily bead off. It somehow packs 850-fill-power goose down into a more streamlined look, giving you a tremendous warmth-to-weight ratio. Even the down itself is water-resistant, so if you do get caught in inclement weather, you’ll have a jacket that continues to keep you warm and insulated.
This version is one of the brand’s lightest yet, weighing just 11 ounces. Despite that, it’s still ultra-warm, and that’s thanks to the baffles. This design adds insulation where it’s needed and cuts out the rest. It also features functional touches, including elastic cuffs, a drawcord hem, a windflap zipper, and articulated elbows. It has a zipper chest pocket for EDC carry, and—one of the main reasons it’s so popular—it can easily fold into its own pocket for travel and storage, fitting easily into any backpack or bag.
This jacket is in the same realm as Patagonia’s Down Sweater and Arc’teryx’s Cerium Jacket, yet it doesn’t carry the premium price of around $300 to $400 as they do. Typically, that would denote a lesser-quality garment, right? That’s not really the case here—this jacket consistently scores high marks for warmth, weight, and performance.

What Wearers Are Saying
Even the lone one-star rating stated that “almost everything is good about this jacket,” although they disliked the fit. Every other reviewer gave it five or four stars, with the majority noting that it’s “amazingly warm.”
One shopper stated that the quality of the material is “top-notch” and the feathers inside are evenly distributed. “Even after packing it, which it packs very small, it fluffs back to its original shape,” they said.
With a $79 discount, the Magma 850 Jacket is likely to sell quickly—it usually does. Don’t miss out on yours and grab it before popular sizes are gone.
