Billie Joe Armstrong and his son, Jakob, partnered to record the classic David Bowie song, “Heroes,” in honor of Survivor 50: In the Hands of Fans, hosted by Jeff Probst. The wistful anthem was first recorded in 1977, and the Armstrongs do it justice while bringing a freshness to the song.
The song dropped Friday morning in the lead-up to the Feb. 25 season opener. Armstrong and his son sing the song as the backdrop for the latest promo trailer, which shows 25-year Emmy-winning highlights of the blood, sweat, and lots of tears the contestants experienced.
On Instagram, Jakob wrote, “I recorded a cover of Heroes for CBS, and it’s out now. It’s the first time my dad and I have done vocals together on a track which is cool. It’s a tough song to do justice – I’m grateful for the opportunity to try.”
The older Armstrong joins the rest of his pop punk band, Green Day, Super Bowl weekend, where they are headlining the Super Bowl Opening Ceremony along with Counting Crows.
This is the first father-son collab, and Jakob, 27, has his own band, called Ultra Q.
Green Day came screaming and thrashing onto the California pop punk music scene in 1994 with their first album, “Dookie,” with chart-topping songs like “Welcome to Paradise,” and have been playing angsty, brat-rock with no sense of slowing down any time soon. Green Day doesn’t have tour dates listed for 2026, but one never knows what they’ll be up to next.
