Jessie J cancels gig at last minute asking fans to ‘respect her decision’

Jessie J ‘personally’ decided to scrap her gig in Toronto last night at the last minute after safety concerns at the venue.

The Price Tag singer was already at Danforth Music Hall in the Canadian city but warned her 1,500 fans not join her.

Last year, Jessie dropped her comeback album but had to postpone the celebrations as she underwent treatment for breast cancer.

Despite subsequent tests finding no spread of the cancer, Jessie found out in August that she needed further treatment, forcing her to reschedule her tour dates.

She’s finally back on the road, but the weather had other plans as temperatures dropped to the coldest on the planet in Canada.

‘I am personally making the decision to cancel tonight’s show in TORONTO,’ Jessie, 37, wrote on Instagram.

Explaining her reasoning for the last-minute cancellation, she continued: ‘I don’t feel comfortable having people risk their safety for the show.

‘I understand some people will be upset and some, I’m sure, will be relieved, however, I feel this is the right decision. You will get a full refund for your tickets.’

Severe amber weather warnings were issued in the region with heavy snowfall — up to 60cm (23.6inches) — covering much of the area.

Bus services were cancelled and residents were advised to leave with extra travel time if they had to commute anywhere.

Jessie added: ‘I am truly sorry. I am currently standing in the venue and getting here wasn’t safe and the snow is only getting worse.

‘I just can’t imagine how people would get home in the dark with the weather like this.’

She asked fans to ‘respect my decision even if you may disagree’, stating that ‘safety always has to come first’.

Fans were disappointed but understanding in her comments section, saying they were ‘so sad’ but ‘respect and appreciate’ Jessie’s choice.

Some were calling for the gigs to be rescheduled later in the year, rather than cancelled and refunded.

Paul O’Hanner wrote: ‘I was on my way, I totally understand, it’s not safe, but please, reschedule ❤️.’

While account SpottedbySerena said: ‘We get it, I live downtown and even I was wondering how I was going to get to the show.’

These dates were already rescheduled due to her treatment, with Jessie due to play seven dates in North America after these Canadian shows.

She’ll be performing in the UK later this year, with an almost sold-out tour scheduled for April across cities like Birmingham, Manchester and London before she heads to Europe.

The mum-of-one, who shares little boy Sky with partner Chanan Colman, first returned to the stage at BBC Radio 2 in the Park in Chelmsford in September.

At the time, she shared how ‘grateful’ she felt to be there after undergoing reconstructive surgery and her treatment.
