Taskmaster fans have witnessed countless weird and wonderful moments across 20 seasons – but there’s still plenty of surprises to look forward to.
Little Alex Horne, Greg Davies’s underling and task-maker extraordinaire, is back for more silly shenanigans with another iconic line-up of comedians trying to conquer a series of absurd challenges over 10 weeks.
Season 21 will star Amy Gledhill, The Thick of It’s Armando Iannucci, Gavin and Stacey actor Joanna Page, presenter Joel Dommett and the one-and-only Hollywood star Kumail Nanjiani.
Now, Alex has revealed that Oscar, Golden Globe and Emmy-nominated creative Kumail is at the heart of a ‘never-before-seen’ scene in the new episodes – no mean feat.
As Alex explained: ‘I don’t want to give much away, but he gives a lot away about what he does by himself in his hotel room. So that’s what you’ve got to tune in for,’ he told Radio Times.
‘He surprised himself by what he revealed, and I was sat next to him, and it’s a big moment. It’s a never-before-seen Taskmaster moment.’
Curious indeed.
Kumail is following in the footsteps of season 20 contestant Jason Mantzoukas in the continuing trend of US-based comics trying their hand at this truly bonkers UK reality series.
When the line-up was announced, Kumail wrote: ‘I got to be on my favourite show with my favourite people! They are all hilarious and absolute sweethearts. This has been the hardest secret to keep.’
The Big Sick star later shared that his agent was completely baffled at his enthusiasm to take part.
He told the Good One podcast: ‘Agents and managers here do not know what Taskmaster is. My lawyer was like: ‘So why are you doing this?”
‘He called me three times to be like: ‘Are you sure you want to do this?” because, you know, TV there doesn’t pay like TV here.
Acknowledging he was probably going to ‘lose money’ doing the show, he added: ‘It was great. It was so fun and I really loved our group, like, truly, genuinely, we all fell in love. It was joyful.’
Of course, the series has enjoyed several memorable moments over the years, including Matthew Baynton licking yoghurt off Alex Horne’s shoe, Jessica Knappett falling off the stage and Joe Wilkinson’s potato hole-in-one.
Perhaps Kumail’s hotel room confessions will be next to join this esteemed list – we certainly hope so.
There is currently no release date for Taskmaster season 21. Seasons one to 20 are available to stream on Channel 4 now.
