Gauteng residents to hold a march to demand water

Disgruntled residents of Midrand, north of Johannesburg, are set to march on Tuesday to demand the restoration of water supply after enduring outages for nearly two weeks.

Community members say the prolonged water disruptions have forced residents to rely on water tankers, purchase bottled water and share limited supplies among neighbours.

Others have resorted to reusing grey water, which residents say is not a sustainable solution.

Increasingly difficult

Affected resident Lebogang Shovhote said the situation has become increasingly difficult for households.

“Many residents have had little to no water for almost two weeks, and people have been coping by queuing for tankers, buying bottled water, sharing water between neighbours, and reusing grey water, but that is not sustainable,” Shovhote said.

Areas most affected by the shortages include Noordwyk, Ivory Park, Ebony Park, Rabie Ridge, Kaalfontein, President Park, Glen Austin and surrounding Midrand suburbs.

Power failures

Johannesburg Water and Rand Water have attributed the supply disruptions to power failures at pumping facilities, emergency infrastructure repairs, pipe leaks and critically low reservoir levels.

Residents say they are demanding immediate action and clear communication from authorities regarding the restoration of water services.
