Dubai has announced plans to build what it says will be the world’s first Gold Street, adding another headline attraction to a city already known for ambitious developments.
The street will form part of the new Dubai Gold District, a purpose-built precinct designed to strengthen the emirate’s position as a global hub for gold and jewellery.
Dubai builds on its “City of Gold” reputation
Dubai is often referred to as the “City of Gold”, largely because of the famous Dubai Gold Souk in Deira, one of the largest gold markets in the world.
The planned Gold Street is expected to build on that reputation, offering a distinctive attraction for tourists and visitors. Developers say the street will be constructed using gold, though specific design details have yet to be revealed.
Plans, designs and details about what the street will feature will be announced in phases.
The Gold Street was announced as part of the official launch of the Dubai Gold District by property developer Ithra Dubai.
The district will include more than 1 000 retailers across gold, jewellery, perfumery, cosmetics and lifestyle categories, positioning it as a major destination for both shoppers and traders.
Popular destination for South Africans
Once completed, the Gold Street is likely to add to Dubai’s appeal for South African visitors already drawn to the city’s retail, tourism and cultural offerings.
The city is served by regular direct flights from South Africa, including routes from Johannesburg and Cape Town, making it a convenient option for holidaymakers and business travellers alike.
