Orlando Pirates’ Sipho Mbule has officially joined on a free transfer ahead of the 2025/2026 Betway Premiership season, ending months of speculation surrounding his future. The 27-year-old midfielder penned a one-year deal with the Soweto giants, with an option to extend his stay for a further two years.
The former SuperSport United playmaker became a free agent after Mamelodi Sundowns declined to activate the extension clause in his contract. Pirates capitalised swiftly, adding Mbule to an already impressive list of new recruits this window.
Mbule, affectionately known as ‘Master Chef’, joins a formidable group of arrivals at Mayfair. Orlando Pirates have already unveiled Yanela Mbuthuma, Sinoxolo Kwayiba, Tshepang Moremi, Tshepho Mashiloane, Masindi Nemtajela, Nkosikhona Ndaba, and Sihle Nduli as new signings.
Pirates have signalled their intent to compete on all fronts this season, and Mbule’s addition brings both flair and experience to their midfield ranks.
Disciplinary struggles at Sekhukhune behind him
Last season, Sundowns sent Mbule out on loan to Sekhukhune United in search of regular game time. He made 17 appearances across all competitions, scoring twice and assisting three times. However, disciplinary issues overshadowed his stint, leading to an early termination of the loan by Babina Noko.
Despite the turbulence, Pirates showed confidence in Mbule’s ability by securing his signature. The Soweto giants are backing their new man to rediscover his best form in black and white.
Spain pre-season under Pirates new coach
Mbule is set to travel with the Orlando Pirates squad for their pre-season tour of Spain under new head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. The Moroccan tactician recently replaced Jose Riveiro, who departed after three trophy-laden seasons to take charge of Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly.
Ouaddou, who left Marumo Gallants last month, steps into a high-pressure role. But inherits a squad stacked with talent and ambition.
