Karen Carney slams ‘unacceptable’ England duo after Euro 2025 defeat to France

Karen Carney slammed two England stars for their ‘unacceptable’ mistake during the Lionesses’ 2-1 defeat to France in their Euro 2025 opener.

Heading into the tournament as the defending champions, Sarina Wiegman’s side now face a challenge to get out of their group after a damaging defeat to France in Zurich on Saturday.

England were outplayed for large swathes of the game, as goals from Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Sandy Baltimore put France two goals ahead at the break.

The Lionesses remained second best in the second half and were unable to rescue a draw after Kiera Walsh’s long-range effort dragged one back late on.

England must now rally before Wednesday’s clash with the Netherlands, and Wiegman’s side now know that a defeat will see them exit the competition with one group game still remaining.

‘We got bullied, we got absolutely bullied,’ former England international Carney told ITV at full-time.

‘You can talk about playing the ball and being in possession all you want but if you have to win your duels and physically compete.

‘We called it before the game. France’s preparation against Brazil, we saw it, and we weren’t prepared for that today. Yes, it got better, but it wasn’t till the 85th when we started to compete.

‘We brought on subs, changed shape and went direct but it was too late. Those last five minutes can’t mask what happened for the rest of the game.’

A lack of physicality was concerning for England, but they also cost themselves with lax defending, most notably for France’s second when Baltimore somehow evaded Leah Williamson and Lucy Bronze to fire past Hannah Hampton.

‘Look who is over there, Lucy Bronze and Leah Williamson and she gets out of it in that situation,’ added Carney as she watched back the goal at half-time.

‘That is unacceptable for us from a defensive perspective. That’s our right-back Lucy Bronze, our centre-back and captain – come on Leah, you are better than that.’

Carney, though, was not ready to throw in the towel on England’s hopes of defending their title, adding: ‘As much as I’ve been harsh and critical, we’ve got to dust ourselves off.

‘We’ve got two games and she (Wiegman) has got to put a focus on the Netherlands. Sometimes you can get too high or too low, and this is the part where we have to move and our leaders have to step up.

‘There have been plenty of teams who have lost their first game and gone on to reach the finals, but we’ve got to wake up quickly and shake ourselves off from tonight’s performance.’

Wiegman not worried despite defeat

Despite the concerning nature of her side’s performance, Wiegman insisted she was not worriedat this early stage of the tournament.

‘We didn’t keep the ball well enough,’ she told BBC Sport. ‘We know [France] are really good, they are powerful so we tried to defend that but we lost the ball a couple of times and that’s where they scored two goals.

‘The second half of course we tried to do better but we needed to put up an extra forward, which we hoped could help us score a goal and we were really close but we need to do better. We need to stick together and move on.

‘I think we cost ourselves problems, which looks like a lack of energy. The team wants to solve that. Yes, I also think that France, in those parts, were better than we were but I do think we wanted to skip players, we wanted to get behind them and receive the balls but we had trouble executing that.

‘I’m not worried I just want to do better and I know the team wants to do better too.’

‘It’s the rule!’ – Wimbledon player throws racket after argument with umpire

Luciano Darderi argued his case to a Wimbledon umpire (Picture: BBC)

Luciano Darderi threw his racket in disgust after arguing with an umpire over a decision during his Wimbledon defeat to Jordan Thompson.

Australia’s Thompson was serving for the first set against Italy’s Darderi when, at 40-15 up, his hat fell off mid-serve in windy conditions on Court 18.

The 31-year-old managed to catch his cap and continued the point, eventually hitting a volley past Darderi to clinch the game and first set.

But Darderi immediately complained to the chair umpire that he should have been awarded the point or, at worst, the point should be replayed.

‘It’s the rule,’ Darderi yelled at Wimbledon umpire Mohamed Lahyani. ‘You are not allowed to play with the cap like this. You are not.’

As Lahyani explained his decision, an animated Darderi responded: ‘What?!’

The world number 59 then slammed his racket down onto his chair, leading to a chorus of boos from the spectators on Court 18.

Darderi also challenged Thompson about the decision, not that the Australian was ever going to refuse the point which put him in the driving seat in the third-round clash.

Lahyani appeared to make a call to double-check he made the right decision as Darderi continued to argue his case.

BBC commentator and former Wimbledon doubles champion Todd Woodbridge said: ‘What happened in this point is Jordan Thompson hit the serve and his hat came off with it.

‘But in the same motion he grabs it in his left hand. He holds it and then plays the whole point, which is multiple shots.

‘Now, the umpire could have said, “replay the point – hindrance”. You get one opportunity for that, if your hat falls off your head or if your ball falls out your pocket, they will replay it once.

‘But if it happens a second time it is immediately the point to the opponent. The other thing that could have happened is Darderi saying, “hold on”, and putting his hand up.

‘The umpire then would have ordered a replay of the point. He has the right to argue, but he is going to lose because he did not say anything in the first place.

‘It is like going back and challenging a call, when the system was in place, you must challenge in that moment.’

Darderi’s mood would not have got any better as he went on to lose 4-6 4-6 6-3 3-6, missing out on a place in the fourth round of Wimbledon.

Speaking out on the incident, Thompson – who plays Taylor Fritz next – said: ‘I mean, my hat’s fallen off before, and I know what the rules are.

‘It didn’t hinder him; it hindered me. So I don’t know what he was complaining about.

‘It’s not like it was 5-all in the fifth, deuce. Every point’s big, but it is what it is.

‘He was having a bit of a whinge, but I get where he’s coming from, but, you know, rules are rules, so just gotta play by them.

‘My hat’s fallen off before and most of the calls have honestly gone against me and that one, it puts him off.

‘I guess if you had to stop the point, I would have happily replayed it, but, I guess it, it doesn’t count unless it, hits the deck, so play on.’

On his promising run at the All England Club, Thompson – ranked No. 44 in the world – added: ‘If someone told me that I was gonna be in the fourth round with the preparation I’ve had, I’d say show me the dotted line.

‘I think grass is my best surface and it hasn’t really shown at Wimbledon so to finally, you know, live up to somewhat expectations is, extremely pleasing.’

Nick Kyrgios says Novak Djokovic and three other players can win Wimbledon

Former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios (Picture: talkSPORT)

Nick Kyrgios claims there are four players capable of winning Wimbledon, including seven-time champion Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic thumped his compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic in straight sets to book his place in the fourth round of Wimbledon.

The 38-year-old is bidding to equal Roger Federer’s tally of eight titles at the All England Club and claim a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title.

Former British number one Tim Henman was impressed by Djokovic’s latest performance in SW19 and said he had sent a ‘statement’ to the rest of the field.

Kyrgios lost to Djokovic in the 2022 Wimbledon final and believes his former rival is capable of triumphing yet again in this year’s Championships.

The Australian former world number 13 naturally views two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and world number one Jannik Sinner as two others contenders for the trophy.

But perhaps more surprisingly, Kyrgios has named American fifth seed Taylor Fritz as another player capable of earning the crown of Wimbledon champion.

Fritz came close to winning his first Grand Slam at last year’s US Open – losing in the final to Sinner – and is excellent on grass, winning his fourth Eastbourne title in the run-up to Wimbledon.

The 27-year-old was involved in two gruelling five-setters in his first two rounds before beating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in four to set up a fourth-round meeting with Jordan Thompson.

Asked if it was possible to see a winner outside of Alcaraz, Sinner and Djokovic, Kyrgios told talkSPORT: ‘The way Taylor Fritz has been playing, it’s probably one of the hardest draws a seed has had.

‘He’s played three guys who are all very dangerous on grass. He’s come through that and is saying his body feels better and better so I honestly wouldn’t count him out.

‘Fritz can do some damage against those guys. Novak has at times looked incredible but the way Sinner and Alcaraz are playing and dialled in, it’s pretty tough to go past those two guys.’

Kyrgios named Sinner as his ‘standout player’ so far at Wimbledon after the Italian dropped just 17 games across his first three wins.

Djokovic sends 'statement' to Wimbledon rivals

Asked which areas of Novak Djokovic’s game impressed him after he cruised into the fourth round, Tim Henman said on BBC One: ‘It was all aspects of his game.

‘He was hitting his spots, dictating from the back of the court and he was able to hit so aggressively without making unforced errors.

‘He had one slight wobble at the end, serving for the match at 5-2 and lost it, but he still finished it off in three straight sets and I think he will be delighted with his progress to the fourth round.

‘Djokovic’s level was just absolutely phenomenal and that is when you realise that on grass he is one of the favourites.

‘At the age of 38, on the hard courts and clay courts it is getting harder and harder between Sinner, Alcaraz and the rest.

‘But the seven-time champion, when he puts in performances like today, then I think it is a statement to the rest of the draw.’

Sinner, a three-time Grand Slam champion bidding to win his maiden Wimbledon title, is yet to drop five games in a single set.

‘It’s hard to look past Jannik Sinner,’ Kyrgios said. ‘He looks really locked in and incredible.

‘He hasn’t lost more than four games in a single set. His form is concerning to the rest of the field. It’s hard not to see an Alcaraz-Sinner final.’

Kyrgios has also been impressed with Britain’s last remaining hope in the men’s draw, former Wimbledon semi-finalist Cameron Norrie.

Norrie, 29, dropped just two sets on his way to the fourth round of Wimbledon. Nicolas Jarry stands in his way of the quarter-finals.

‘Cam is a seasoned veteran now,’ Kyrgios added. ‘He’s solidified himself in the rankings and is pretty much always seeded at Grand Slams.

‘He’s had success here as well. The year I got to the final, he lost to Novak in the semis. He’s a tough competitor and the only male Brit still in.

‘He’s flying under the radar a bit and he’s just going to keep his head down and do all the right things. He’s definitely dangerous, who knows how far he can go with the draw opening up.’
