Karen Carney slammed two England stars for their ‘unacceptable’ mistake during the Lionesses’ 2-1 defeat to France in their Euro 2025 opener.
Heading into the tournament as the defending champions, Sarina Wiegman’s side now face a challenge to get out of their group after a damaging defeat to France in Zurich on Saturday.
England were outplayed for large swathes of the game, as goals from Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Sandy Baltimore put France two goals ahead at the break.
The Lionesses remained second best in the second half and were unable to rescue a draw after Kiera Walsh’s long-range effort dragged one back late on.
England must now rally before Wednesday’s clash with the Netherlands, and Wiegman’s side now know that a defeat will see them exit the competition with one group game still remaining.
‘We got bullied, we got absolutely bullied,’ former England international Carney told ITV at full-time.
‘You can talk about playing the ball and being in possession all you want but if you have to win your duels and physically compete.

‘We called it before the game. France’s preparation against Brazil, we saw it, and we weren’t prepared for that today. Yes, it got better, but it wasn’t till the 85th when we started to compete.
‘We brought on subs, changed shape and went direct but it was too late. Those last five minutes can’t mask what happened for the rest of the game.’
A lack of physicality was concerning for England, but they also cost themselves with lax defending, most notably for France’s second when Baltimore somehow evaded Leah Williamson and Lucy Bronze to fire past Hannah Hampton.
‘Look who is over there, Lucy Bronze and Leah Williamson and she gets out of it in that situation,’ added Carney as she watched back the goal at half-time.
‘That is unacceptable for us from a defensive perspective. That’s our right-back Lucy Bronze, our centre-back and captain – come on Leah, you are better than that.’

Carney, though, was not ready to throw in the towel on England’s hopes of defending their title, adding: ‘As much as I’ve been harsh and critical, we’ve got to dust ourselves off.
‘We’ve got two games and she (Wiegman) has got to put a focus on the Netherlands. Sometimes you can get too high or too low, and this is the part where we have to move and our leaders have to step up.
‘There have been plenty of teams who have lost their first game and gone on to reach the finals, but we’ve got to wake up quickly and shake ourselves off from tonight’s performance.’
Wiegman not worried despite defeat

Despite the concerning nature of her side’s performance, Wiegman insisted she was not worriedat this early stage of the tournament.
‘We didn’t keep the ball well enough,’ she told BBC Sport. ‘We know [France] are really good, they are powerful so we tried to defend that but we lost the ball a couple of times and that’s where they scored two goals.
‘The second half of course we tried to do better but we needed to put up an extra forward, which we hoped could help us score a goal and we were really close but we need to do better. We need to stick together and move on.
‘I think we cost ourselves problems, which looks like a lack of energy. The team wants to solve that. Yes, I also think that France, in those parts, were better than we were but I do think we wanted to skip players, we wanted to get behind them and receive the balls but we had trouble executing that.
‘I’m not worried I just want to do better and I know the team wants to do better too.’
