The man accused of stabbing four University of Idaho students to death appeared to give a wry smile as he arrived in court to plead guilty and avoid the death penalty.
Bryan Kohberger wore a light gray colored dress shirt and patterned tie and flashed the smile at his attorney, Anne Taylor, as his hearing began on Wednesday morning.
About an hour before Kohberger was due to arrive, family members of the victims began walking into the Ada County Courthouse. They sat together and appeared somber while waiting for the hearing to start.
Kohberger’s plea deal sparing him of the death penalty has not only angered victims’ families, but left them in fear of what he might do next.
Kohberger struck a plea deal on Tuesday for the murders of the four students in November 2022.
After finding out about the plea deal, the father of victim Kaylee Goncalves said he was afraid that Kohberger will spend the rest of his life behind bars writing a book or leaking his story to the world.
By agreeing to the deal, Kohberger avoids his trial that was set to begin in August – and may never have to answer to why he targeted and killed the students.
