Finally, a ranking that matters! Liverpool rated fifth best city in the UK for music lovers

We’ve got The Cavern Club. We’ve spent many a night dancing away in The Jacaranda. We’ve got an O2 Academy, a full blown arena, the Olympia and Empire, but we’re still only fifth? Make that make sense.

Liverpool and “live music” seem to be a bit synonymous with students across the city. Yes, that might just be because there’s a guy with a guitar in the corner of every single pub in town, but I digress.

In a brand new set of rankings created by SEATPICK, our city has been rated the fifth best UK city for music lovers to live in, based on the amount of venues it’s got, and events it’s held. Remember, quality over quantity guys.

The online ticket retailer took different aspects into consideration when collecting the data. The ranking table was determined by working out the amount of venues, concerts, festivals, and any music related businesses that we’ve got in the city, as well as the number of artists that originated here.

SEATPICK then calculated a score out of 10 for each city, based on all of these factors. Guess what we got? A 7.06!

The data shows that we’ve got 76 different music venues, and 87 shops that sell instruments, vinyl, and any other music related bits and bobs. Over the past year, 368 concerts were held, of all kinds of styles and genres. That’s pretty good going in my eyes.

You might be surprised to find out that 344 different artists actually originated in Liverpool. Of course, we’ve got the likes of The Beatles, Cilla Black and The La’s, but it’s nice to know that our music scene is still growing to this day. That’s also a much bigger total than Leeds, Edinburgh, and Brighton, which are all sat below us in the table. I think we’ve got bragging rights there.

In terms of festivals, the data has shown that Liverpool only hosted 17 festivals in that amount of time. I guess you could say our events are a bit underground and exclusive, right?

Liverpool might have been pipped to the post by the likes of Bristol, Glasgow and Manchester, but I’d say our long standing live music lore is a little bit better than theirs.

London took the top spot, as expected, but I’m putting that down to sheer size, and nothing else.

The highlight of SEATPICK’s brand new data is the fact in the old ranking table, we were actually sat in second place. That’s right, Liverpool just below London, and Manchester and Bristol were nowhere to be seen. Hey, maybe next year.

Go and have a boogie outside The Jac tonight, and celebrate our small win. We know deep down we’re still an official city of music, so nothing can stop us from skipping a 4pm lecture to start pre drinking for a gig. It’s the best part of the uni lifestyle after all.
