Squid Game cast reveals surprising on-set ritual when each character died

There’s practically one death per minute in season three of Netflix’s Squid Game. The Squid Game cast have revealed an unexpected on-set tradition they had for the actors whose characters died.

Park Sung-hoon, who portrays Cho Hyun-ju in Squid Game, told Gold Derby: “So in Korea, just generally there’s a tradition when someone wraps production, we would give them a bouquet of flowers and also give a big round of applause to them. But it was ironic for Squid Game because if you’re leaving the set, that means you’re dead. So it was kind of ironic to give them a bouquet of flowers and clap for them, but we did that anyways.”

It must have been so jarring for the cast and crew to do this while filming Squid Game. Imagine the set of the horrendous hide and seek game or the jump rope challenge strewn with corpses and fake blood, and everyone just stops to hand and flowers and give a little round of applause.

T.O.P, who starred as Thanos, added: “And what’s funnier is that the one who’s got the biggest smile bringing the bouquet of flowers is director Hwang. He’s so happy to kill off people. He says, ‘Thank you for dying. There are less days to go in the production.’ So he’s very happy to see all these people die. And I think that’s really funny. He told me that he was most happy to see less bunk beds in the dormitory because when we take one away, that means one more person died.”

The director Hwang Dong-hyuk explained he wasn’t able to do this for all 456 players in Squid Game seasons two and three, because on some days on set so many characters died in one go that it would have taken forever. But the major cast members all received flowers. Aw.
