Emotional Cristiano Ronaldo pays tribute after Liverpool star Diogo Jota dies aged 28

An emotional Cristiano Ronaldo has paid tribute to Diogo Jota after the Liverpool player died at the age of 28.

Jota and his brother Andre Silva, 26, died in a car crash in the Spanish province of Zamora.

Liverpool Football Club have been left ‘devastated’ by the ‘unimaginable loss’.

Jota scored 65 goals in 182 games for Liverpool and helped Arne Slot’s side win the Premier League title last season.

The forward was a key player for Portugal for the best part of a decade, making most of his 65 caps alongside all-time great Ronaldo.

Ronaldo said the death of his international teammate ‘did not make sense’ and sent his condolences to Jota’s family.

‘Doesn’t make any sense,’ he posted on social media. ‘Just now we were together in the National Team, just now you were married.

‘To your family, to your wife and children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. R.I.P. Diogo and Andre We will all miss you.’

Jota, who joined the Reds in 2020 from Wolves, won the Premier League last season and was also part of the squad that won the FA Cup and League Cup double in 2021-22.
