Perhaps the most, ahem, critically divisive scenes in season three of Squid Game were the moments with the VIPs. Many, many Netflix viewers have critiqued the dialogue, acting skills and overall cringe of the scenes with VIPs. One of the VIP actors has legit responded to these criticisms.
Bryan Bucco portrayed John, the long-haired VIP in the eagle mask who kept betting on 222. Underneath a TikTok video parodying his character’s lines in the show, Bryan clarified that it wasn’t his voice the video. He wrote: “Those are the English dubs. Not the actor’s voices, by the way. I was the actual actor. What’s being played here isn’t my voice.”
He questioned if Netflix was “messing sh*t up” since apparently he’d seen clips of Squid Game from some countries in which his original voice was used, and other clips in which his voice was dubbed.
Bryan explained: “I think whoever is contracted to do the dubbing, does all the dubbing. That will always be the default English dub. The Korean version shouldn’t have English dubs. If there are some in the Korean version, it would have to be due to specific lines having to be re-recorded for clarity.

“It seems they did use voice actors to try and sound like us. I don’t even want to sh*t on my voice actor either, because I think he did fine. I’m sure it wasn’t easy for him to say his lines either.”
Bryan also flat-out admitted the VIPs were “useless”. He said: “They didn’t further the story or compliment it well.”
Bryan did share that he enjoyed his time on the Squid Game set. “Everyone was super nice. Our scenes were the very, very last scenes to be filmed, meaning there were no other major actors around except the Front Man. [We only] filmed for three days. It was a nice break from studying/work. Every night we sat together reading through the lines questioning how any of it should really be said lol” Bryan also added he got “good food” on set. Well, that’s something.
The creator of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has also responded to people’s complaints about the VIPs. He admitted he had “some regrets” about these scenes, and that it was hard to find “well-known” actors for these roles.
