London ranked as Europe’s most expensive city for students

A new study has revealed that London is the most expensive place in Europe for international students.

Factors such as the high cost of rent – an average of $3,481 (around £2,565) per month for a one bedroom flat – earned London its high ranking.

The study by Remitly also used visa costs, Numbeo cost of living rankings, and average international tuition fees to assign each city with an Education Expenses Index score, ranked out of 100. London came 19th with a score of 74.22.

New York was ranked the most expensive city to study in the world

American university cities dominated the top spots, with New York ranking number one with a full 100 points. London joined Singapore and Sydney as the only non-US universities in the top 20.

At the other end of the scale, the crown for the cheapest city to study in Europe went to Baku, Azerbaijan, scoring just 16.47 out of 100. However, Europe’s cheapest capital city to study in is Athens, ranking sixth cheapest with 25.02 points.

Cairo was ranked the cheapest city in the world to study, scoring just 8.03 out of 100. A one bedroom flat in Egypt’s capital costs only $251.21 per month (£185), just 7.2 per cent of London’s average monthly rent.

Despite the soaring costs, international students still flock to London. Perhaps it’s because the high rent is still significantly lower than top US study locations- the average cost for a one-bedroom flat in New York is a whopping $5,100 per month (around £3,766). Furthermore, London universities consistently rank among the top institutions in the world, drawing students from all over the globe.
