People are burning their Labubus after creepy theory links them to ancient demon Pazuzu

The Labubu craze is still going, but some people have started burning the furry little monsters after a viral conspiracy theory that claims they are possessed by a demon called Pazuzu.

Labubus went viral earlier this year after major celebs like Rihanna and Dua Lipa were spotted with them hanging from their designer bags, and everyone soon wanted one of the collectible charms.

People are now obsessed with collecting all the different colours and designs as an innocent hobby, but the evil-looking monster dolls might not be as innocent as they seem.

A conspiracy theory has started circling social media that Labubus are actually possessed by Pazuzu, a demon from ancient Mesopotamian mythology. The historical region is now part of Iraq.

In the mythology, Pazuzu is the king of the wind demons, associated with storms and drought. The figure is usually depicted with a rectangular head, horns, eyebrows, deep-set eyes and wings.

One of the most defining features of the demon is its large jaw and wide smile with teeth on display, which is a bit similar to Labubu dolls..

An image has gone viral on social media that claims to show a Pazuzu demon next to a Labubu and they look eerily alike, but this isn’t actually what he ancient demon looks like.

The real Pazuzu (pictured below) isn’t really anything like the Pop Mart monsters, but people are running with the conspiracy nonetheless and telling others to get rid of their Labubus.

“I’m not superstitious, I’m a little stitious, but I’d never buy a Labubu. It comes from Pazuzu, which is a demon, and possessed the girl in The Exorcist,” one person said on X.

Another wrote: “Please before falling into the trap of Labubu or any trend nowadays, do your research. THEY’RE MADE AFTER A DEMON DEITY (Pazuzu as they say).”

Some people are even burning their Labubus or blessing them with holy water to purge any evil. Others think the demon theory explains why they shot to popularity so ridiculously quickly.

Labubus were created by an artist called Kasing Lung as part of a series of characters called The Monsters, and he insists he was inspired by Nordic mythology, not Mesopotamian.

Anyway, according to Britannia, the Mesopotamian people actually believed that Pazuzu helped humans ward off other demons, and they put its face on necklaces for protection.

So, even if Labubus are um… demons, they could actually be protectors. That’s a much nicer theory.
