ANC praises Ramaphosa’s decision to place Mchunu on leave

The African National Congress (ANC) has welcomed President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to place Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on special leave, describing it as a bold and responsible step in response to serious allegations.

ANC backs Ramaphosa, calls for credible probe into Mkhwanazi claims

Speaking with SABC News, ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri said the party believes the decision will allow for a credible investigation into claims made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

“We are confident this will take us to the root of the matter. The process must help determine whether South Africans are truly safe and if law enforcement institutions are upholding their constitutional duties,” she said.

“Placing Minister Mchunu on a leave of absence is an important and responsible decision,” she added.

President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation on Sunday night, 13 July 2025. Following explosive allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Commissioner’s Allegations Raise Serious Concerns

Last week, Commissioner Mkhwanazi accused Minister Mchunu and Deputy National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya of interfering in police operations.

He claimed they orchestrated the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team.

The unit had investigated over 600 politically motivated murders and secured more than 100 convictions.

Mkhwanazi said neither the national nor provincial commissioners approved the unit’s disbandment.

He argued that the move disrupted crucial investigations into political violence and organised crime.

Do you think placing Minister Mchunu on leave was the right step, or should the President have taken stronger action?
