Augusta’s Senior Citizens Council to close due to federal funding cuts

AUGUSTA (WJBF) – Federal funding is being slashed to a local agency that serves seniors in Augusta.

The impact will be felt by more than older residents of the CSRA.

The Senior Citizens Council of Greater Augusta will close its doors July 31.  The agency will begin selling EVERYTHING in their building beginning Monday, July 21st.

The majority of the funding that is being cut came from the Community for National and Community Services under programs call AmeriCorp Seniors.

According to the Executive Director of that agency, the funding made possible the Foster Grandparents program which served children with special needs.  Seniors would help struggling students with academics.

The funding also made possible a program called Senior Companions which served older special needs persons who needed minimal assistance to age in place.

Coming up Friday on NewsChannel 6 at Noon, Mary Morrison will sit down with the executive director to talk more about how these federal budget cuts will impact those programs.
