*Major spoilers for I Know What You Did Last Summer below*
Madelyn Cline has revealed that she was in tears over a shock return to I Know What You Did Last Summer.
The slasher sequel was released in cinemas yesterday, focusing on a new group of Southport locals being hunted by a hook-wielding killer who is out for revenge.
In the 1997 original, Sarah Michelle Gellar starred as beauty queen Helen Shivers alongside Freddie Prinze Jr, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ryan Phillippe, but her character was brutally killed off before the end.
Freddie and Jennifer reprised their roles as Ray Bronson and Julie James for the new reboot, which was released in cinemas yesterday, but Sarah had always maintained that she would not be following suit.
In a twist worthy of the big screen, the 48-year-old actually did return to the big screen in a dream sequence that was kept majorly under wraps.

Speaking to Metro, Madelyn – who starred as Danica and shared the screen with SMG for the emotional scene – opened up about the surprise moment and whether she was given any advice on stepping into the horror realm.
‘Oh, yes, I was just texting her this morning! She is truly incredible,’ the actress told us. ‘Her and Freddie, their whole family is so sweet.
‘She doesn’t come in and is like, “Okay, I’m going to give you advice. I’m going to mentor you.” It’s just the way she moves…
‘She’s an icon, in every sense of the word, and I have always been a huge fan of hers. To have this experience with her is so surreal.

‘When Jen [Kaytin Robinson, director] told me that we were going to write that scene in, I screamed. I was so excited, but then so nervous.
‘The first couple takes I was shaking, like, “Oh, my God! Holy s**t!” It is so, so iconic. I remember getting on the phone with my mom and dad at the end of that day crying, “oh, my God, what just happened?!”’
The I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot threw the traditional horror rule book out of the window multiple times in the 1 hour, 51-minute run time.
Not only did the three main female characters survive, Freddie’s character was unveiled as one of the killers – after surviving the first two movies alongside Jennifer.

But Madelyn made it clear that the newcomers wanted to ‘preserve and protect’ the legacy of the original as much as possible.
‘I don’t think we’re switching anything up,’ she insisted. ‘What’s cool about it is that we really pay respects to the original formula that works so well.
‘It’s not like we were going by a playbook but I think we’re all big fans of the first [movie] so just by that alone, we didn’t want to switch it up too much. There’s something about bringing something back and modernizing it in a way…
‘Some people have the idea of completely changing it. And then some of us really, really want to preserve and protect what made it so good to begin with.’
I Know What You Did Last Summer is in cinemas now.
