Gauteng residents woke up to mild winter conditions on Monday, with temperatures hovering above five degrees in many areas. Although the season is slowly shifting, forecasters warn that winter is not over.
Most interior parts of Gauteng, including Pretoria, started the day at around 6°C, with temperatures expected to climb into the upper teens as the day progresses. Vereeniging, however, will remain cooler, peaking at just 16°C. The province will enjoy dry conditions under partly cloudy skies.
“Just to remind us that winter is not yet over, but things are starting to warm up across the eastern areas,” said Joel Guy, a weather forecaster.
“This morning is not too cold for much of the interior of South Africa.”
Areas in Limpopo and Mpumalanga bordering Gauteng are experiencing slightly warmer temperatures, with Polokwane and Hammanskraal seeing highs in the mid-20s. Palabora, Giyani, and Musina can expect highs of around 24°C to 25°C under partly cloudy skies.
Snow Possible in Lesotho, Light Rain Further South
Although Gauteng will remain dry, a weak cold front brushing along the South Coast brings moisture to parts of the country. Light snow may fall around Lesotho, potentially affecting the Drakensberg Mountains later in the evening. Scattered rain and thundershowers are forecast for the Eastern Cape interior and northern Free State.
Winds remain fresh to strong along the east and south coasts, reaching speeds of up to 40 km/h.
Despite Gauteng’s generally dry outlook, residents are advised to monitor conditions in surrounding regions, especially those planning travel toward mountainous or southern areas where weather may change rapidly.
