Two killed in single-car crash in Burke Co., officials say speeding was a factor

BURKE COUNTY, Ga. (WJBF) – On Wednesday, August 13th, around 7:40 p.m., the Burke County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single-vehicle accident on the 800 block of Hancock Landing Road.

Officials say the preliminary investigation indicates the driver was speeding and failed to negotiate a curve.

The vehicle left the roadway, striking a culvert in the ditch along the west shoulder. The impact caused the vehicle to flip and overturn several times before coming to rest on the same shoulder.

Neither one of the two occupants inside the vehicle survived the crash. The names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Division is handling the investigation.

Sheriff Alfonzo Williams expressed condolences to the families of the victims, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones of those lost in this tragic accident.”

No additional information is available at this time. Updates will be released as the investigation progresses.
