Rickie Fowler’s presence in the BMW Championship this weekend has been hotly debated after he made the FedEx Cup Playoffs thanks to some stellar play on sponsor’s exemptions. Some believe he shouldn’t have been granted a spot in the playoffs after needing those sponsor exemptions to get into a few PGA Tour events while others think his play speaks for itself.
Rickie Fowler Punches His Ticket to BMW Championship
For much of the 2025 season, Fowler was flirting with the FedEx Cup Playoff line. He snuck into the St. Jude Championship last weekend and needed a strong showing to keep his Tour Championship hopes alive. That’s exactly what he did, finishing the tournament inside the top 10 and punching his ticket to the BMW Championship.
Now he’s taking advantage of his strong play once again. On Thursday, Aug. 14, Fowler got off to an inauspicious start bogeying two of his first three holes, but he’s battled back since, adding four birdies to sit at 3-under par – tied for the lead with Viktor Hovland.
Fowler’s Wife, a Former Athlete, Was Surprised By His Temperament
During an episode of Netflix’s Full Swing that debuted in 2024, Allison Stokke, a track and field athlete who was first linked to Fowler in 2017, recalled a poignant moment early on in their relationship about how he kept the focus elsewhere after a challenging day on the course.
“When we first met, I remember you were at the Masters, at the very, very beginning, however you finished, wasn’t what you wanted. I think you texted me, ‘Hey, how’s your day going,’ and I’m like, wait, what? I was just expecting complete, I don’t know, anger, not texting me for a while or not calling me for a while.”
Fowler admitted his wife helped him open up during his struggles on Tour.
“Going through this struggle for the last few years, and learning to open up and share more is not easy,” Fowler said on “Full Swing.” “But for me, being able to get input or hear her side, it means something.”
Now he’s making a run for the Tour Championship.
