Wild Video Shows Plane Smashing Into Runway While Landing in Windstorm

A UPS cargo plane smashed down in Taiwan’s capital city on Wednesday, August 13, and the scary ordeal was caught on video.

A Boeing 747 freighter was seen attempting to land at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport during inclement weather. After two failed attempts, UPS Flight 5X61 touched down but heavy winds caused the jet to run off the runway. Video shows the plane, which was arriving from Hong Kong, struggling to remain balanced before scraping its right engine on the ground, causing a burst of sparks.

While no injuries were reported, bits of the plane were ripped off during the near disaster. An investigation is underway.

According to Reuters, “Typhoon Podul blew through southern Taiwan on Wednesday packing winds of up to 191 kph (118 mph).”

One person was reported missing, “as a large swathe of the island shut down and hundreds of flights were cancelled.”

“Nine cities and counties announced the suspension of work and school for Wednesday, including the southern metropolises of Kaohsiung and Tainan,” the outlet reported, adding that 33 people reported injuries. However, according to Reuters, Taipei was hit with “blustery winds but no impact.”

Days prior, in another runway incident, a Delta plane collided with an empty jet while preparing for departure in Atlanta. The plane, which was heading to Guatemala City on Sunday, clipped the wing of another aircraft, the airline reported.

With nearly 200 passengers and crew members onboard, “there were no reports of injuries for crew or customers on the flight.”
