Two Carnival Cruise passengers died in separate incidents on Friday, Aug. 15, at a private resort in the Bahamas, the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) confirmed in a news release.
How did two Carnival Cruise passengers die on the same day?
The first incident occurred shortly before midday at Celebration Key on Grand Bahama Island, where workers found a 79-year-old man “unresponsive” following a snorkeling excursion. He reportedly became incapacitated while in the water and had to be brought back to shore by a lifeguard. Despite CPR efforts, the man was pronounced dead by local medical professionals.
In a separate incident which occurred just a few hours later, around 2:30 p.m. local time, police officials found a 74-year-old woman aboard another cruise ship. She, too, was “unresponsive.” CPR was again administered, but the woman was pronounced dead. “The initial report suggests that the female became unresponsive while swimming in a pool,” authorities explained. The deceased passengers were traveling on separate Carnival Cruise ships, which were both docked at Celebration Key on Friday.

What has Carnival Cruise said about the deaths?
“Our lifeguards and medical team responded to two separate water emergency incidents at Celebration Key on Friday—one in the lagoon and one at the beach,” Carnival confirmed in a statement to People. “Sadly, both guests have passed away. One guest was sailing with family on Mardi Gras, and one guest was sailing with family on Carnival Elation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the guests and their families, and our Care Team is providing assistance.”
Per the RBPF’s news release, autopsies will be conducted on both victims to determine the exact cause of death. Police investigations into both of the deaths are ongoing. Celebration Key, which boasts multiple bars and swimming pools as well as a “DJ island,” had its grand opening just a month ago on July 19.
