Ben Stiller is clocking out of his directing role on Severance. In a new interview with the Los Angeles Times, Stiller spoke out about his experience working on the Emmy-winning series and what’s next for the almost-60-year-old star.
Severance was renewed for a third season on March 21, the same day that the season 2 finale aired on Apple TV+. While no premiere date is set for the third season yet, it’s sure to look quite different this time around without Stiller at the helm.
The Zoolander star previously directed most of the first two seasons of Severance, working on 11 of the show’s 19 previously aired episodes. He will still serve as a writer and executive producer for season three, but will leave the director’s chair for someone else.
When Stiller spoke with the LA Times in June, he was reportedly already hard at work writing season three of Severance, according to columnist Glenn Whipp. “I’m at the point in my life where I’m like, ‘The clock is ticking,’” Stiller told him, partly alluding to his upcoming 60th birthday in November, “the older you get, the more you realize that you only have so much time.”
Instead of directing season three, Stiller will be working on a number of upcoming feature length films, including a documentary he made about his parents: Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost. He is also prepping to film London, a war movie with Oscar Isaac; Bag Man, based on Rachel Maddow’s podcast of the same name, and Focker In-Law, the highly anticipated follow-up to the Meet The Fockers franchise.
It’s unclear who is set to direct season three of Severance in Stiller’s absence. The show has had four directors in its prior two seasons besides Stiller, including cinematographer Jessica Lee Gagné.
