KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has outlined a three-step plan aimed at keeping communities safe and reducing crime.
He was speaking at a Stakeholders’ Engagement Session hosted by the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government.
The event, held on Tuesday night, 19 August, sought to strengthen partnerships and bring together stakeholders to address crime, safety challenges, and sustainable solutions.
MKHWANAZI SHARES THREE-STEP PLAN
During his briefing, Mkhwanazi explained that police officers are tasked with three key responsibilities. Firstly, they must ensure that crime is reduced, which means fewer cases being reported. However, he emphasised that any failure to register legitimate cases would constitute grounds for dismissal.
Secondly, he stressed that police stations must maintain clean audits and remain accountable for every cent received.
Thirdly, Mkhwanazi said community satisfaction is vital. To achieve this, police officers are required to hold monthly community engagement sessions and provide regular briefings on the state of policing.
TEAMWORK IS NEEDED
Meanwhile, Premier Ntuli urged the business sector to collaborate with law enforcement in the fight against crime. He highlighted the importance of using modern technology, such as drones and CCTV cameras, to deter criminal activity and create a safer province.
The Premier also noted that addressing broader civic issues is crucial in reducing crime. He encouraged businesses to work alongside law enforcement to ensure safer operating environments.
“If we work together, we can change this province. I believe that everything starts with conversation. When the conversation is honest, it becomes easier to confront the challenges we face,” Ntuli said.
He added that lasting change is only possible when all stakeholders unite behind a common goal.
