An iconic rock band have announced they are ‘unlikely to play many of the cities’ on their upcoming tour ‘ever again’.

After forming in 1993 in Madison, Wisconsin, Garbage’s eponymous 1995 debut album saw them take off, selling over four million copies and achieving double platinum certification in the UK, the US, and Australia.

The band’s line up has remained unchanged since its conception and consists of Scottish singer Shirley Manson and American musicians Duke Erikson, Steve Marker and Butch Vig.

Some of the band’s most notable songs have included Stupid Girl and Only Happy When It Rains. Over the past 32 years they’ve sold over 17 million albums worldwide and been nominated for 7 Grammy and 2 Brit Awards.

However, they’ve now told fans that their upcoming US tour marks what will likely be their last shows ever in many cities.

Sharing the news on Instagram, they wrote: ‘Yesterday saw the commencement of rehearsals for our last North American headline tour . We haven’t played an extensive headline tour like this one in the States for almost a decade. If the truth be told, it is unlikely we will play many of the cities on this tour ever again.

‘We are going out on the road with the spectacular @starcrawler, fronted by superstar @arrowdewilde, who is one of the most exciting front people of her generation.

‘We are going out in style, and we hope you will join us. That’s life my friends. Nothing stays the same forever. Everything must change. All beautiful things come to an end.  We love you. From all of us in garbage.’

Responding to the news, fans didn’t appear shocked by the band’s news, but expressed their excitement at getting to see them soon.

‘Not unexpected but still bittersweet. I want to thank you for this tour. It’s a privilege to get to see you perform a headlining show one last time. I love you all. I can’t wait to see you in DC!’ Lori commented.

‘I suspected this news might come. We (the fans) are so grateful for everything you’ve given us for over 30 years. You’ve literally soundtracked the majority of my life, and no matter what happens, your legacy and back catalogue will continue to do so. Without expectation, I’m still going to hope that Happy Endings reaches the UK and Europe. Have an absolute blast on this tour. You deserve to celebrate everything!’ Dan wrote.

‘Just hope you continue to make music. I had the privilege to see you live in 2016 in Indianapolis and it was a highlight of my life,’ Sean added.

Garbage will begin their Happy Endings tour on September 3 in Orlando, Florida, travelling to 35 other US and Canadian cities, before wrapping up in Mexico City, Mexico on November 14.

Last year they’d been forced to cancel a string of shows after Manson required ‘surgery and rehabilitation’ for an undisclosed injury that she’d suffered on tour in Europe earlier in the year.

Around the same time she spoke to Metro, detailing a difficult decade facing health problems, but how she felt grateful for still being able to perform.

‘As I get older and older, I realise I don’t know how much time I have left,’ she explained.

‘It’s something that doesn’t cross your mind when you’re 18 years old. But now every show feels really precious to me.

‘When I used to come and play shows, I’d be like, “Oh, we can come back and get them next time”. Whereas now, I’m like, “I don’t know if I’ll ever come back to play.”

‘It adds a certain gravitas to the experience, but it also peppers the tour with magic because I feel I must enjoy it and revel in it.’
