Veteran CapeTalk radio host John Maytham has delivered a scathing on-air critique of Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, amid renewed controversy surrounding the minister’s resurfaced racist tweets and his performance in office.
McKenzie, the leader of the Patriotic Alliance, has faced widespread backlash following the circulation of past social media posts in which he allegedly used racial slurs, including the ‘k-word’.
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) weighed in this week, condemning the language and affirming that such terms have no place in a democratic society.

But it was Maytham’s candid comments that drew immediate attention.
‘I’m Not Intimidated by You’
Speaking on his show, Maytham said he would not be silenced by McKenzie’s political bluster.
“I’m not intimidated by you, even though others might be,” Maytham said.
He argued that the growth of McKenzie’s party stems more from voter desperation than inspiration.
“Unfortunately, I think it is true that your party is growing, and part of the reason… is that people are desperate for the kind of strongman lies that you tell them.”
Maytham also took direct aim at McKenzie’s tenure as Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, claiming those in the latter two communities in particular hold him in low regard.
“Everybody I know, and that’s quite a number, in the Arts and Culture world thinks you’re a useless minister and isn’t impressed by you at all. I hear a litany of promises made and promises broken …”
He ended his segment with a stinging rebuke.
“The less I talk about Gayton McKenzie, the happier I go to sleep.”
