Deftone’s lead singer and guitarist, Chino Moreno, opens up in an interview with TheGuardian on whether fans will ever get to hear their unreleased album Eros. The album was abandoned after the band’s bassist, Chi Cheng, went into a coma following a car accident in 2008.
“We’re always asked about Eros,” explained Moreno. “It will most likely never see the light of day. That would involve going back to that period and resurrecting unfinished things, and somehow bringing them to completion.”
He admits that a majority of the songs that were created for the Eros album weren’t even close to being ready, with the song “Dallas” being the only one “anywhere near finished.” Deftones worked on the album between 2008 and 2009.
Morean explains the band’s newest album, PrivateMusic, was originally ideas each member of the band worked on separately during the pandemic.
“And when we got together to actually start making the record, none of us wanted to look back at those ideas from the pandemic – we wanted to capture the moment we’re in today,” Moreno explained.
His comment echoes the band’s stance on whether Eros will ever be worked on and completed for release.
“So going back to try to capture what was happening back during Eros, and finishing those ideas, doesn’t really make sense,” he commented.
During the creation of Eros, Cheng was in a serious car accident in November 2008 in Santa Clara, California. He was sitting in the passenger seat when the vehicle collided with another car, causing Chen to sustain critical injuries and go into a coma. It prompted the band to put a hold on the album.
Following the accident, Cheng was placed on life support for several months before stabilizing after multiple surgeries and rehabilitation. He was left in a semi-conscious state for six years before his death on April 13, 2013.
Deftones released their album Private Music on August 22, 2025.
