Veteran actress Mam’ Nandi Nyembe, celebrated for her legendary storytelling and cultural impact, has died at 75.
NANDI NYEMBE DIES AT 75
Nandi Nyembe, renowned for roles in Zone 14, Isibaya, and Soul City, was celebrated as a beloved cultural treasure.
Her passing was confirmed on Saturday evening, 23 August, in a joint statement by the Nyembe family and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
“It is with profound sorrow that the Nyembe Family, together with the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, announce the passing of one of South Africa’s most treasured icons of the arts, Mam’ Nandi Nyembe,” read a statement.
“Mam’ Nandi was far more than an actress; she was the very soul of South African storytelling. A teacher, a guide, and a mother to this nation, she carried our struggles, our laughter, and our victories through every performance with truth, dignity, and heart. Through her life and work, she gave our people pride and our stories, a purpose.”

Her grandson, Jabulani Nyembe, said that to their family, the actress was everything, and they’re grateful for the love and support.
“To the world, she was a gifted actress; to us, she was our everything. Her love, laughter, and strength will stay with us always. We are so grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support during this time,” Nandi’s grandson Jabulani Nyembe said.
Earlier this year, Nandi Nyembe opened up about financial struggles after depleting savings for her son’s costly medical care. Even as her health worsened, Nyembe remained determined to act, refusing to depend on charity or financial support from others.
Confined to a wheelchair, Nyembe’s drive and devotion to her craft remained undiminished, showcasing her passion for performing arts. She revealed spending nearly R88,000 on her son’s medical treatment, which left her financially vulnerable and struggling without stability.
Fans donated money to her during her financial struggles to help her recover.
