South Africa is mourning the heartbreaking loss of veteran actress Nandi Nyembe, who passed away at 75.
HEALTH STRUGGLES AND PASSING
While the exact cause of her passing has not been publicly disclosed, her health had been declining over the past years.
Nyembe had been wheelchair-bound due to deteriorating health, which did not stop her passion and drive to continue acting regularly.
Sunday World previously reported that the actress had spinal cord issues. In April, she told the publication that she had undergone surgery on her right knee and was waiting for surgery on her left knee.
“My spinal cord is actually also giving me problems, and I do not have medical aid. I go to a government hospital, Charlette Maxeke Hospital,” she said.
NYEMBE’S FAMILY ANNOUCNES HER PASSING
Her passing was confirmed on Saturday evening, 23 August 2025, by her family and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
The Nyembe family released a joint statement expressing profound sorrow. The statement highlighted her life, career, and the impact she had on countless fans.
“It is with profound sorrow that the Nyembe Family, together with the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, announce the passing of one of South Africa’s most treasured icons of the arts, Mam’ Nandi Nyembe,” read a statement.
“Mam’ Nandi was far more than an actress; she was the very soul of South African storytelling. A teacher, a guide, and a mother to this nation, she carried our struggles, our laughter, and our victories through every performance with truth, dignity, and heart. Through her life and work, she gave our people pride and our stories, a purpose.”
FINANCIAL HARDSHIPS
Earlier this year, Nandi Nyembe disclosed financial struggles. She said she depleted her savings, spending approximately R88,000 on her son’s urgent medical treatment.
She highlighted the absence of pensions and royalties in South Africa’s entertainment industry, which left her financially exposed and vulnerable.
Despite facing these serious hardships, Nyembe refused to accept handouts, insisting she remained determined to work and preserve her independence.
Tributes and messages of condolence are continuing to pour in from fans, colleagues, and the public for Nandi Nyembe.
