The battle between Call Of Duty and Battlefield 6 may be closer than many expected, as Activision finds itself under pressure for the first time in years.
In reality, there’s no chance at all that Battlefield 6 will outsell this year’s Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7, but it is certainly proving enough of a threat that it will coax a reaction out of Activision.
Online, there’s far more positive buzz surrounding Battlefield 6, thanks to its beta demos and EA saying all the right things to drum up hype. Even Call Of Duty players are saying they’ll be ditching the series once Battlefield 6 launches, with the latest Black Ops 7 trailer accruing a whopping 388,000 dislikes, opposite 54,000 likes on YouTube.
Activision reportedly isn’t threatened by Battlefield 6, but that attitude could change considering EA’s military shooter is now significantly outperforming Black Ops 7 in terms of pre-orders on the PlayStation Store.
As spotted by Call Of Duty news site CharlieIntel, Battlefield 6’s Phantom Edition and standard edition – which were first announced some weeks ago now – are sitting comfortably in the third and fifth slots on the PlayStation store’s best-selling pre-orders list.
Meanwhile, Black Ops 7’s Vault Edition (the one superfans of Call Of Duty are more inclined to buy) is only at number eight, while the standard edition of the game isn’t even in the top 10. And that despite the fact that pre-orders only opened during Gamescom last week.

That’s for the US store but if you look at the UK store, things aren’t a whole lot better for Black Ops 7.
At the time of writing, Black Ops 7’s Vault Edition (which costs £100) is the fourth most pre-ordered PlayStation game, coming in behind EA Sports FC 26’s Ultimate Edition, the digital deluxe edition of Metal Gear Solid Delta, and NBA 2K26 Superstar Edition.
Battlefield 6’s Phantom Edition comes in at seventh place, while the standard edition is at 10th place. However, both are still outperforming the standard edition of Black Ops 7, which is in 13th place, below even Borderlands 4.

While there are no exact pre-order figures for Battlefield 6 or Black Ops 7, this does add to the idea that Call Of Duty players have grown tired of the series, for multiple reasons, and are now seeing Battlefield 6 as the more desirable option.
This is certainly a common sentiment online, with many a player elated that Battlefield 6 is sticking with its straight-laced military aesthetic and has zero plans to sell wacky crossover skins of celebrities and cartoon characters, which is a common critique of modern Call Of Duty.
However, it’s still strange to see Call Of Duty fans throw their weight behind Battlefield 6 when the most recent game, Black Ops 6, was widely accepted to be one of the good ones – rather than a disaster like Modern Warfare 3.
Other contributing factors could include a resentment of Call Of Duty’s microtransactions (though Battlefield 6 is bound to have them too), frustration with Black Ops 6’s movement options (which are more controversial than you may expect), or simply because of the series’ ties to the Xbox brand, which has taken a significant hit thanks to the recent wave of layoffs.
The real question is whether this negative sentiment extends beyond the walls of Reddit and X threads and carries through to casual players. But it should prove enough of a wake-up call for Activision to instigate some major changes in the future.
