This new matcha syrup is trending but the TikTok girlies don’t approve – here’s why

Everyone is in their matcha era right now and you can’t walk down a British high street without seeing a coffee shop advertising it.

However, we all know that it’s often not viable to buy a coffee shop matcha every day so when Tesco launched its new matcha concentrate, the internet went wild.

The syrup costs £3.75. has 10 servings, and is available in strawberry and vanilla.

But, after a number of TikTokers tried and it reviewed it negatively, people are starting to u-turn on the new product’s hype.

TikTok creator Chloe Denny made a viral video about the syrup to encourage matcha girlies to give it a try.

Chloe, in her video, claimed that the matcha concentrate tasted “pretty good” but she was surprised by the colour. The video has 23,200 likes but the comment section wasn’t screaming the product’s praise.

The TikToker used nearly a third of the bottle in one glass of milk to get the flavour to come through. This left the matcha girlies in shock as Tesco’s instructions suggest using 50ml syrup per serving along with 150ml milk/water.

While some of the viewers were really excited to try it out and happy with the affordability, the comments were all not sweet. The top comment on the video read: “That ain’t real matcha.”

Many matcha girlies also raised concerns regarding the ingredient list, which reads: “Water, sugar, matcha green tea powder (2.5 per cent), and flavouring.”

The viewers also questioned the high sugar levels and low matcha content as well, with one user writing: “Check out the sugar, oooooft.”

Others resonated with similar feelings claiming that it does not live up to expectations and tastes nothing like traditional matcha.

“The matcha actually tastes like nothing, it’s ass,” One user claimed.

Across TikTok and Instagram, these review videos are making the rounds. In another video, one user commented: “The whole of Japan is in shock right now.”

Additionally, whilst matcha girlies were excited to try the syrup due to its convenience and flavour profile, many were taken aback by the colour as both flavours looked yellow when mixed.

One of the comments read: “Not hating or anything but that is not real, you can tell of the colour.”

A fellow commenter added: “If you ever see me drinking this, just know I am at rock bottom,” with another user even claiming: “It’s nothing but flavoured milk.”

However, on a positive note, many matcha girlies claimed the syrup is perfect for a matcha lemonade but just not suitable for a flavoured latte.

Tesco has been approached for comment but has not yet responded.
