An assistant director for Emily in Paris has died on set whilst filming for the Netflix show was taking place. Production, which had been taking place in Venice, was then paused.
The man has been named as 47-year-old Diego Borella. Local newspaper La Repubblica confirmed the incident and said medics were called to Hotel Danieli in the city at around 19:00 local time (18:00 BST) on Thursday. They were unable to save him.
He sadly passed away on set for the show, after he “suddenly” collapsed in front of colleagues who were preparing to film a scene. It’s been reported the scene that was being filmed for at the time was the last one in that area. Production was believed to be in its final stages ahead of wrapping up.
Local news has said the cause of death was likely of “a sudden heart attack,” but nothing has been confirmed. Filming was immediately suspended, but according to Deadline, it resumed over the weekend.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm the sudden passing of a member of the Emily in Paris production family,” a spokesperson from Paramount Television Studios, which produces the show for Netflix, told BBC News. “Our hearts go out to the individual’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
Borella had trained in Rome, London, and New York. In addition to film, the director had recently worked across poetry, and the writing of fairy tales and children’s stories.
The fifth season of Emily in Paris is due to air later this year, on December 18th. Netflix has not commented on if this schedule has been affected. “This season is a tale of two cities. Rome and Paris,” creator Darren Star said of the new episodes. “Straddling both, Emily takes love and life to the next level.”
