What You Drink Could Be Sabotaging Your Hair

If your hairline is receding, it may not be your genes. What you drink regularly could be a big contributor—including that large soda or glass of bourbon.

Recent research published in Nutrition and Health, an online international peer-reviewed journal, shows a link between common beverages and hair loss, some of which may surprise you. Over 61,000 participants across 17 studies were analyzed, and found that consumption of sugary drinks and alcohol was positively correlated with hair loss.

So regularly downing sodas, sweetened beverages, or multiple alcoholic beverages a week could ruin your hairdo. Why?

Processed food and drink are to blame. Both are high in simple sugars, which can stimulate excess sebum production. That mixture of lipids normally helps moisturize the skin, but too much can be a bad thing. This can create an oily environment that fosters microbial growth on the scalp, which leads to irritation and inflammation—two factors that exacerbate hair loss.

The study also suggests that limiting alcohol and soft drinks may actually benefit hair health. What else can you do? A lot, actually.

How To Maintain Your Hair Health

In addition to limiting sugary drinks and alcohol, you can take a few simple steps to potentially prevent hair loss, including:

  • Eat protein-rich foods like lean meats, eggs, and legumes.
  • Consume adequate levels of vitamin D and iron.
  • Manage stress.
  • Get enough sleep.
  • Use mild hair care products.
  • Avoid excessive heat styling.
