It’s out with the old and in with the new. But the folks over at Killington Resort in Vermont are first going to put an oldie but a goodie up for auction.
The iconic resort is currently conducting an online auction for its retired Skyeship Gondolas. The resort is doing away with the old gondolas as part of a $38 million upgrade at the resort.
But the Skyeship Gondolas have sort of a nostalgic feel to them, and that’s why Killington Resort is resorting to auctioning them off rather than trashing them. According to Killington, the gondola cabins were first put into circulation in 1994, transporting millions of tourists since then up the resort’s 2.5-mile hike.
The cabins feature 45 whimsical and varied designs, each provided by a local artist. They each weigh a whopping 950 pounds. Dozens have already been auctioned off for more than $2,000.
“When the auction opened at 10 a.m. on Monday, we sold out of those in less than 20 minutes, and there were 90 of those listed at that buy-now price,” said Killington Resort Communications Manager Josh Reed, via WCAX.
The resort says that, after researching liquidation prices from companies, starting bids are at $1,000.

According to Reed, some of the proceeds will help smaller resorts raise capital to fund improvements, which include repairing lifts and snowcats.
